Read Before You Watch (Part 3)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit

The middle installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. Bilbo and friends continue their perilous nine-hour hike to the Misty Mountains to recover their Dwarven gold from a thieving dragon. Short on time? Read the book; it’s faster.  We have both an extensively  annotated version and a nifty graphic novelization, and since none of them play at 48 frames-per-second, motion sickness isn’t a concern. Unless you read in the car.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Cloudy with a Chance

The short but brilliant children’s classic about meteorological lunch phenomena is so tantalizing, it inspired both an animated film and now a sequel. Cloudy the book has its own sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh, which is unrelated to the upcoming movie.  You’ll find both books in our Library Science Collection, if we haven’t been squashed by falling flapjacks by then.

Grace of Monaco

Grace: The Secret Lives of a Princess

Grace Kelly, perhaps the most elegant Hollywood starlet of her day, married Prince Raineir III of Monaco in 1956, fulfilling the schoolgirl daydream of becoming a princess. Her story hits the silver screen this November with Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman.

Princess Grace

Our Main Collection is brimming with Grace Kelly biographies. These include James Spada’s Grace: The Secret Lives of a Princess, and two entries titled Princess Grace, by Gwen Robyns and Sarah Bradford respectively. Want to see Grace in action? Check out Nigh Noon, To Catch A Thief, and Rear Window, all in our media collection!

This Pulitzer-winning modern classic is about…okay, I’ve got nothing. Never read it, seen it, or heard anyone talk about it. If you’re like me, the upcoming adaptation directed by/starring George Clooney may be your first exposure to Tracy Letts’s play.  Or I could track it down in our Main Collection and Online Resources.
