Happy Birthday, John Updike!

Today is local author John Updike’s birthday. Updike was born in Reading, Pa., and spent some years living in Shillington, Pa. before moving with his father to Plowville, Pa. Both Reading and Shillington were inspiration for Brewer and Olinger, Updike’s fictitious towns.

After attending Harvard as an undergraduate, Updike worked for the New Yorker. Eventually, he wrote and published many novels that we have in a special collection at Rohrbach Library.
